True connoisseurs don’t just drink wine, they taste secrets.CASEMATTE: A WINERY ON THE STRAIT

Casematte is a winery located in the large territory of Messina, which was funded in 2008 thanks to the concept and to the obstinacy of Gianfranco Sabbatino, who is an accountant by profession and a winemaker by passion. He involved in this project also his friend Andrea Barzagli with his enthusiasm. Their big challenge is to bring back Faro Doc, the historic local wine.

Our Philosophy

We grow our grapevines in organic farming. Even in the cellar we limit the use of small oak barrels and new wood in order to obtain elegant, territorial wines that best enhance the peculiarities of the original grape varieties.

Grape Varieties

The total extension of the vineyard, about 10 hectares, is cultivated with the Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera and Nero d’Avola varieties, in the percentages provided for by the Faro Doc regulations.

Climate and Territory

The hilly lands where the terracing of our vineyards are located, extending up to about 500 meters above sea level, are exposed to the north and overlook the sea. The winds coming from the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, that cross in the facing Strait of Messina, create a particular microclimate that greatly favors the temperature range between day and night, even in midsummer, so as not to thermally stress our vines during the delicate
ripening phase.
